<p>Women everywhere struggle for years as they traverse the geography of menopause. The natural depletion of estrogen as a woman enters this biological and emotional passage can make her body rage between hot flashes, night sweats, moodiness and clouded thinking. To some it&#8217;s pure hell. To others it&#8217;s a simple chapter in life. To the men in their lives, its undeniable stress to the relationship and a feeling of helplessness.</p>
<p>As women get frustrated, they visit their gynecologist looking for estrogen supplements to boost their diminishing hormone levels and get their inconvenient introductions to menopause under control. Today there are more choices than the mare&#8217;s urine, cancer inducing estrogen pills, called Premarin, of our mother&#8217;s and grandmother&#8217;s day.</p>

<p>U.S. Health Officials estimate 900,000 people each year become ill &#8211; and possibly 900 die &#8211; from waterborne disease. The General Accounting Office estimates 66% of Safe Drinking Water Act violations aren&#8217;t reported.</p>
<p>The contamination of water is directly related to the degree of contamination of our environment. Rainwater flushes airborne pollution from the skies, and then washes over the land before running into the, rivers, aquifers, and lakes that supply our drinking water. Any and all chemicals generated by human activity can and will find their way into water supplies.</p>
<p>The chemical element chlorine is a corrosive, poisonous, greenish-yellow gas that has a suffocating odor and is 2 1/2 times heavier than air. Chlorine belongs to the group of elements called halogens. The halogens combine with metals to form compounds called halides. Chlorine is manufactured commercially by running an electric current through salt water. This process produces free chlorine, hydrogen, and sodium hydroxide. Chlorine is changed to its liquid form by compressing the gas, the resulting liquid is then shipped. Liquid chlorine is mixed into drinking water and swimming pools to destroy bacteria.</p>
<p>Until recently, concerns about drinking water focused on eliminating pathogens. The chlorine used to reduce the risk of infectious disease may account for a substantial portion of the cancer risk associated with drinking water. Chlorination of drinking water was a major factor in the reduction in the mortality rates associated with waterborne pathogen. The use of chlorine was believed to be safe. This view is evident in an article, which appeared on the back page of the New York Times. The report stated that with the use of chlorine, &#8220;Any municipal water supply can be made as pure as mountain spring water. Chlorination destroys all animal and microbial life, leaving no trace of itself afterwards&#8221;. This statement reflected opinion accepted until recent years when halogenated organic compounds, such as chloroform, were identified in chlorinated drinking water supplies. Recent surveys show that these compounds are common in water supplies throughout the United States.</p>
<p>These concerns about cancer risks associated with chemical contamination from chlorination by-products have resulted in numerous epidemiological studies. These studies generally support the notion that by-products of chlorination are associated with increased cancer risks.</p>
<p>Chlorine is used to combat microbial contamination, but it can react with organic matter in the water and form dangerous, carcinogenic Trihalomethanes. According to Dr. Joseph M. Price, MD, in Moseby&#8217;s Medical Dictionary, &#8220;Chlorine is the greatest crippler and killer of modern times. It is an insidious poison&#8221;.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not like this information hasn&#8217;t been known by medical professionals.  A 1992 study that made front-page headlines, and was reported on in the American Journal of Public Health researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee found that people who regularly drink tap water containing high levels of chlorine by-products have a greater risk of developing bladder and rectal cancers than people who drink unchlorinated water. The study estimates that about 9 percent of all bladder cancer and 18 percent of all rectal cancer cases are associated with long-term consumption of these by-products. This amounts to over 20,000 new cases each year.</p>

<p>Morris, with epidemiologist Thomas C. Chalmers and his colleagues at Harvard, used a new technique called meta-analysis to combine the results from the 10 best studies, yielding the new findings. They report that people drinking chlorinated water over long periods have a 21% increase in the risk of contracting bladder cancer and a 38% increase in the risk of rectal cancer. &#8220;I am quite convinced, based on this study, that there is an association between cancer and chlorinated water.&#8221;, says Robert D. Morris of the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, who</p>
<p>directed the new study.</p>
<p>About 90% of the population is drinking water which may contain hundreds of these Disinfection By-products (DBPs), also known as Trihalomethanes. The Environmental Protection Agency lowered the Maximum Contaminant Level for Disinfection By-products but it will be years before the new standard goes into effect.</p>
<p>Dr. Herbert Schwartz of Cumberland County College in Vineman, N.J. says: &#8220;Chlorine has so many dangers it should be banned. Putting chlorine in the water supply is like starting a time bomb. Cancer, heart trouble, premature senility, both mental and physical, are conditions attributable to chlorine treated water supplies. It is making us grow old before our time by producing symptoms of aging such as hardening of the arteries.&#8221;</p>
<p>Chlorine has been hailed as the saviour against cholera and various other water-borne diseases; and rightfully so. Its disinfectant qualities and economy of production have allowed communities and whole cities to grow and prosper by providing disease-free tap water to homes and industry. Some people have grown-up on tap water, and believe the taste of chlorine signifies purity and safety. Well, not necessarily so.</p>
<h3>Chlorine is, essentially, bleach.</h3>
<p>And what comes out of most municipally delivered faucets is, quite actually, a mild bleach solution. Is it healthy to drink bleach? Does your body require any certain amount of chlorine to remain healthy? Feel free to consult a physician on that somewhat rhetorical question.<br />
Consider some well-known attributes of chlorine. Let&#8217;s say, &#8220;the dark side&#8221; of the saviour. A PhD chemist put it this way: &#8220;If I were assigned to go into a lab and produce a menu of known carcinogens (cancer-causing agents), the first thing I would do wo<a href="http://www.kangenwaterportland.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/196.jpg" target="_blank"><img style="margin: 5px;" src="http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs085/1102673188530/img/196.gif" border="0" alt="chemicals" hspace="5" vspace="5" width="153" height="198" align="left" /></a>uld be to grab-up a cylinder of chlorine and start bubbling it through some water that contains naturally occuring organic acids (humic and fumic acids &#8212; as are found in all natural bodies of water like rivers, lakes, reservoirs, etc.).&#8221;<br />
Note the &#8220;ch loro&#8221; part in the following: trichlorophosphate (TCP) and the trihalomethane group (THMs) which includes chloroform. You may recognize these known bad guys by the legally imposed requirement of your municipality to periodically m ake report to the public (newspaper) on the levels of these known or highly suspected carcinogens in the tap water being produced. There are others, but those are popularly known. And they&#8217;re all chlorine by-products.</p>
<p>Another problem directly related to chlorine disinfection are the aesthetic properties imparted when chlorine is combined with organic compounds that are natural to open bodies of water (surface water). This regards the &#8220;taste and odor&#8221; problems many municipalities experience during certain times of the year (especially in four-season latitudes) which draw their water supply from surface water. Surface water includes ponds, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, etc., as opposed to underground sources (wells, aquifers). Bubble chlorine through humic and fumic acids common to surface water supplies and you produce the &#8220;fishy&#8221; or &#8220;musty&#8221; odors and tastes so common in the spring and fall, when the lake &#8220;turns-over.&#8221;  <a href="http://www.kangenwaterportland.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/111.jpg" target="_blank"><img style="margin: 5px;" src="http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs085/1102673188530/img/111.jpg" border="0" alt="enagic_sd501_pic" hspace="5" vspace="5" width="113" height="109" align="right" /></a><br />
The good news is, you don&#8217;t have to drink it anymore. The most practical and efficient method for removing chlorine, chlorine by-products, and taste and odor problems, is to filter it at the tap, with your Enagic Ionizer.</p>
<p>The municipalities are stuck. Environmental and public safety laws require most to maintain a chlorine residual throughout the entire water main delivery system. This is to retain some disinfecting properties in the event of groundwater infiltration and other contaminations. Barking at your local water company or water department about the taste and odor will accomplish nothing. Chances are, they&#8217;re doing their best, and meeting the laws. The most practical solution to the problem is to take it back out at the &#8220;point of use&#8221; (POU) &#8212; your own home or office.</p>

<p>In a remarkable turnabout, federal health officials say many Americans are now getting too much fluoride because of its presence not just in drinking water but in toothpaste, mouthwash and other products, and it&#8217;s causing splotches on children&#8217;s teeth and perhaps more serious problems.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.kangenwaterportland.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/glass.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-461" title="Glass" src="http://www.kangenwaterportland.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/glass-240x300.jpg" alt="Fluoride" width="240" height="300" /></a>The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced plans Friday to lower the recommended level of fluoride in drinking water for the first time in nearly 50 years, based on a fresh review of the science.</p>
<p>The announcement is likely to renew the battle over fluoridation, even though the addition of fluoride to drinking water is considered one of the greatest public health successes of the 20th century. The U.S. prevalence of decay in at least one tooth among teens has declined from about 90 percent to 60 percent.</p>
<p>The government first began urging municipal water systems to add fluoride in the early 1950s. Since then, it has been put in toothpaste and mouthwash. It is also in a lot of bottled water and in soda. Some kids even take fluoride supplements. Now, young children may be getting too much.</p>
<p>&#8220;Like anything else, you can have too much of a good thing,&#8221; said Dr. Howard Pollick, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco&#8217;s dental school and spokesman for the American Dental Association.</p>
<p>One reason behind the change: About 2 out of 5 adolescents have tooth streaking or spottiness because of too much fluoride, a government study found recently. In extreme cases, teeth can be pitted by the mineral &#8211; though many cases are so mild only dentists notice it. The problem is generally considered cosmetic and not a reason for serious concern.</p>
<p>The splotchy tooth condition, fluorosis, is unexpectedly common in youngsters ages 12 through 15 and appears to have grown more common since the 1980s, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.</p>
<h3>But there are also growing worries about more serious dangers from fluoride.</h3>
<p>The Environmental Protection Agency released two new reviews of research on fluoride Friday. One of the studies found that prolonged, high intake of fluoride can increase the risk of brittle bones, fractures and crippling bone abnormalities.</p>
<p>Critics of fluoridated water seized on the proposed change Friday to renew their attacks on it &#8211; a battle that dates back to at least the Cold War 1950s, when it was denounced by some as a step toward Communism. Many activists nowadays don&#8217;t think fluoride is essential, and they praised the government&#8217;s new steps.</p>
<p>&#8220;Anybody who was anti-fluoride was considered crazy,&#8221; said Deborah Catrow, who successfully fought a ballot proposal in 2005 that would have added fluoride to drinking water in Springfield, Ohio. &#8220;It&#8217;s amazing that people have been so convinced that this is an OK thing to do.&#8221;</p>
<p>Dental and medical groups applauded the announcement.</p>
<p>&#8220;This change is necessary because Americans have access to more sources of fluoride than they did when water fluoridation was first introduced,&#8221; Dr. O. Marion Burton, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, said in a statement.<a href="http://www.kangenwaterportland.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/teeth.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-462 alignright" title="teeth" src="http://www.kangenwaterportland.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/teeth-300x168.jpg" alt="Kangen Water Portland" width="300" height="168" /></a></p>
<p>The fluoridated water standard since 1962 has been a range of 0.7 parts per million for warmer climates where people used to drink more water to 1.2 parts per million in cooler regions. The new proposal from HHS would set the recommended level at just 0.7. Meanwhile, the EPA said it is reviewing whether to lower the maximum allowable level of fluoride in drinking water from the current 4 parts per million.</p>
<p>&#8220;EPA&#8217;s new analysis will help us make sure that people benefit from tooth decay prevention while at the same time avoiding the unwanted health effects from too much fluoride,&#8221; said Peter Silva, an EPA assistant administrator.</p>
<p>Fluoride is a mineral that exists in water and soil. About 70 years ago, scientists discovered that people whose supplies naturally had more fluoride also had fewer cavities.</p>
<p>In 1945, Grand Rapids, Mich., became the world&#8217;s first city to add fluoride to its drinking water. Six years later a study found a dramatic decline in tooth decay among children there, and the surgeon general endorsed water fluoridation.</p>
<p>And in 1955, Procter &amp; Gamble Co. marketed the first fluoride toothpaste, Crest, with the slogan &#8220;Look, Mom, no cavities!&#8221;</p>
<p>But that same year, The New York Times called fluoridation of public water one of the country&#8217;s &#8220;fiercest controversies.&#8221; The story said some opponents called the campaign for fluoridation &#8220;the work of Communists who want to soften the brains of the American people.&#8221;</p>
<p>The battles continue for a variety of reasons today.</p>
<p>In New York, the village of Cobleskill outside Albany stopped adding fluoride to its drinking water in 2007 after the longtime water superintendent became convinced the additive was contributing to his knee problems. Two years later, the village reversed the move after dentists and doctors complained.</p>
<p>According to a recent CDC report, nea rly 23 percent of children ages 12 to 15 had fluorosis in a study done in 1986-87. That rose to 41 percent in a study that covered 1999 through 2004.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.kangenwaterportland.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Kangen-Water-Portland.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-463" title="Kangen Water Portland" src="http://www.kangenwaterportland.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Kangen-Water-Portland.jpg" alt="Kangen Water Portland" width="269" height="187" /></a>&#8220;The report of discoloration has been going up over the years,&#8221; said Dr. Robert Barsley, a professor at the LSU Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry. &#8220;It is not the water that&#8217;s causing this by any means. It&#8217;s the extra fluoride products &#8211; toothpaste, mouthwash &#8211; that people are using. And people want nice white teeth so they brush three times a day.&#8221;</p>
<p>Susan Jeansonne, oral health program manager for Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, said one reason for the problem is children swallowing fluoride toothpaste or eating it.</p>
<p>Toothpaste labels have long recommended that parents supervise children under 6 when they are brushing their teeth; give them only a pea-size amount; and make sure they spit it out. Toddlers under 2 shouldn&#8217;t use toothpaste with fluoride.</p>
<p>In 2006, the National Academy of Sciences released a report recommending that the EPA lower its maximum allowable level of fluoride in drinking water. The report warned severe fluorosis could occur at 2 parts per million. Also, a majority of the report&#8217;s authors said a lifetime of drinking water with fluoride at 4 parts per million or higher could raise the risk of broken bones.</p>
<p>In addition, in 2005, the heads of 11 EPA unions, including ones representing the agency&#8217;s scientists, pleaded with the EPA to reduce the permissible level of fluoride in water to zero, citing research suggesting it can cause cancer.</p>
<p>In Europe, fluoride is rarely added to water supplies. In Britain, only about 10 percent of the population has fluoridated water. It has been a controversial issue there, with critics arguing people shouldn&#8217;t be forced to have &#8220;medical treatment&#8221; forced on them.</p>

<p><span style="font-family: Georgia;">It can be said that the chemistry of life is water chemistry. For the body to function properly, it must be hydrated properly. Moreover, the qualities and properties of the water we drink can determine the quality of our health.</span></p>

CHICAGO May 17, 2010 (AP)</em></p>
<p>A new analysis of U.S. health data links children&#8217;s attention-deficit disorder with exposure to common pesticides used on fruits and vegetables.</p>
<p>While the study couldn&#8217;t prove that pesticides used in agriculture contribute to childhood learning problems, experts said the research is persuasive.</p>
<p>&#8220;I would take it quite seriously,&#8221; said Virginia  Rauh of Columbia University, who has studied prenatal exposure to pesticides and wasn&#8217;t involved in the new study.</p>
<p>More research will be needed to confirm the tie, she said.</p>
<p>Children may be especially prone to the health risks of pesticides because they&#8217;re still growing and they may consume more pesticide residue than adults relative to their body weight.</p>
<p>In the body, pesticides break down into compounds that can be measured in urine. Almost universally, the study found detectable levels: The compounds turned up in the urine of 94 percent of the children.</p>
<p>The kids with higher levels had increased chances of having ADHD, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, a common problem that causes students to have trouble in school. The findings were published Monday in Pediatrics.</p>
<p>The children may have eaten food treated with pesticides, breathed it in the air or swallowed it in their drinking water. The study didn&#8217;t determine how they were exposed. Experts said it&#8217;s likely children who don&#8217;t live near farms are exposed through what they eat.</p>
<p>&#8220;Exposure is practically ubiquitous. We&#8217;re all exposed,&#8221; said lead author Maryse Bouchard of the University of Montreal.</p>
<p>She said people can limit their exposure by eating organic produce. Frozen blueberries, strawberries and celery had more pesticide residue than other foods in one government report.</p>
<p>A 2008 Emory University study found that in children who switched to organically grown fruits and vegetables, urine levels of pesticide compounds dropped to undetectable or close to undetectable levels.</p>
<p>Because of known dangers of pesticides in humans, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency limits how much residue can stay on food. But the new study shows it&#8217;s possible even tiny, allowable amounts of pesticide may affect brain chemistry, Rauh said.</p>
<p>The exact causes behind the children&#8217;s reported ADHD though are unclear. Any number of factors could have caused the symptoms and the link with pesticides could be by chance.</p>
<p>The new findings are based on one-time urine samples in 1,139 children and interviews with their parents to determine which children had ADHD. The children, ages 8 to 15, took part in a government health survey in 2000-2004.</p>
<p>As reported by their parents, about 150 children in the study either showed the severe inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity characteristic of ADHD, or were taking drugs to treat it.</p>
<p>The study dealt with one common type of pesticide called organophosphates. Levels of six pesticide compounds were measured. For the most frequent compound detected, 20 percent of the children with above-average levels had ADHD. In children with no detectable amount in their urine, 10 percent had ADHD.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is a well conducted study,&#8221; said Dr. Lynn Goldman of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a former EPA administrator.</p>
<p>Relying on one urine sample for each child, instead of multiple samples over time, wasn&#8217;t ideal, Goldman said.</p>
<p>The study provides more evidence that the government should encourage farmers to switch to organic methods, said Margaret Reeves, senior scientist with the Pesticide Action Network, an advocacy group that&#8217;s been working to end the use of many pesticides.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s unpardonable to allow this exposure to continue,&#8221; Reeves said.</p>

<p>Gout is a kind of arthritis. It can cause an attack of sudden burning pain, stiffness, and swelling in a joint, usually a big toe. These attacks can happen over and over unless gout is treated. Over time, they can harm your joints, tendons, and other tissues. Gout is most common in men.</p>
<p><strong>What causes gout?</strong></p>
<p>Gout is caused by too much uric acid in the blood. When uric acid levels in the blood are too high, the uric acid may form hard crystals in your joints.</p>
<p>Your chances of getting gout are higher if you are overweight, drink too much alcohol, or eat too much meat and fish that are high in chemicals called purines. Some medicines, such as water pills (diuretics), can also bring on gout.</p>

Unintentional dehydration is primarily due to our misguided belief that we think we are properly hydrated because we drink soda, coffee, tea and alcohol and 6 glasses of water a day. <p>Water removes acidic wastes in the body. Unintentional dehydration leads to acidosis, retention of acidic wastes in the blood including uric acids. In dehydration the body goes into “drought management” mode to supply water first to brain, blood, kidneys and liver causing localized drought areas in the least priority areas like the distal joints of the toes and fingers.</p>
<p>The uric acidic blood flowing into the dehydrated joints cause irritation of the nerve endings causing joint pains.</p>

<p><strong>What&#8217;s The &#8220;pH Factor&#8221;?</strong></p>
<p>The body is largely made up of water, a medium which is biologically useful in allowing nutrients and various chemicals to be transported from place to place. This water-based medium can have either acid or base (alkaline) properties. These acid-base properties are measured by what we call pH, and how pH affects the body is called the &#8220;pH Factor&#8221;.</p>
<p><strong>Is A Balance pH Important?</strong></p>
<p>Exceptionally important! Since most of the body is water-based (making up 50-60% of our total body weight), the pH level (or acidbase level) has profound effects on body chemistry, health and disease.  Extended pH imbalances of any kind are not well tolerated by the body. Indeed, the entire metabolic process depends on a balanced pH.
